| Question | Do you listen to much classical music, if so, could you recommend some? – Thelevellers, 2009-10-17 at 14:58:43 (19 comments) |

I've got a few obvious ones, like Bach's Brandenberg concerto and Holst's The Planets. My dad did give me a HUGE list to try last night, but it is a little TOO long! My problem is I don't know where to start, and while I know many names of composers (thank-you Monty Python's 'The Decomposing Composers'), I don't know any names of pieces of music. Oh, and I have a problem with opera - I hate that style of singing almost universally. I have just quite enjoyed having Carmina Burana on while reading and commenting on here though... |

I've got the whole 5-disc set of Time-Life's '100 classical masterpieces', along with a bunch of other classical albums like 'In classical mood' - compilations are a good start. One good album is 'Vivaldi cello concertos' by Ofra Harnoy. You could also try an album by the Mediaeval Baebes - not strictly classical, but I like them anyway. And Myleene Klass released pop-like versions of classical music in her 'Moving on' album. My favourite individual pieces are Beethoven's 'Moonlight sonata' and Barber's 'Adagio for strings'. |

Having said that, there are a few composers, like Pachelbel, who I instantly like. His Canon has to be one of the most heard classical compositions in history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pachelbel%27s_Canon |

It's not in any of my collections and the only versions I've heard have been the Canon Rock versions on YouTube, like this one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_Gl6fsrP5E (Woo, I just passed 4,000 points). |

Their others are good too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apocalyptica Even System of a Down translates to the electric violin. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMKmQmkJ9gg And more music generally... http://www.discussionator.com/bookmarks.html#Music |

System of a Down translates into 2 or three entire albums by String quartet! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqIFBbSN80c That quartet have done muse, queens of the Stone Age and Offsrping... Love it all in the right mood! :) I'm not a big fan of Metallica myself, the wrong kind of heavy for me really, Apocalyptica are cool, but again they have that same heavy edge and I don't find myself wanting to listen that much... |

Given how popular it is in that sense though, it's surprising that I haven't heard it by itself - at least, not knowingly. I only remember using my superpower once, and I'd only gain a few meagre points from it - so I'm still over 4,000. You can see a complete breakdown of a user's points on their 'Responses' list in their profile. You've given me the most, of course... |

I like mostly Romantic/Impressionist composers: Chopin, Debussy, Scriabin, etc. If you want to get some classical recordings for free, head over to www.classiccat.com. Also useful is www.pianosociety.org and their classical music wiki. I use it all the time for sheet music. |
